(Rock Hill).- The NBA is facing one of the biggest scandals in its recent history. This Thursday, U.S. authorities revealed details of two fraud investigations involving players, coaches, and members of the organized crime network.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, more than 30 people have been arrested in connection with two alleged schemes: one involving illegal sports betting and another linked to rigged poker games.
Among those arrested are prominent NBA figures, including Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers; Terry Rozier, player for the Miami Heat; and Damon Jones, former player for teams such as the Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The NBA released a statement announcing its initial measures while reviewing the allegations. Experts note that although Rozier, Jones, and Billups are the most visible figures, the impact of the scandal goes far beyond them, affecting the credibility of the league and public perception of professional basketball in the United States.
NBA’s Credibility at Stake
The main victim is undoubtedly the league’s trustworthiness. Its association with legal betting has come under scrutiny, as many betting companies and platforms sponsor official broadcasts. Furthermore, there is a risk that game outcomes could be manipulated using insider information.
Rozier and Jones are accused of leaking information about undisclosed injuries, which allegedly was used to influence sports betting predictions.
Ties to Organized Crime
The scandal also involves four of New York’s most traditional organized crime families: the Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese, and Bonnano families. Historically, organized crime has sought to link itself with sports, as seen in the Black Sox Scandal of 1919, when the World Series was rigged.
Implications Beyond the Scandal
The fraud affects not only the NBA’s image but also raises concerns about the integrity of the sport, the leadership of Commissioner Adam Silver, and the development of projects like the European Basketball League. The combination of illegal betting, rigged poker, and insider information sets a dangerous precedent for the league.
The NBA now faces the challenge of restoring fan trust, strengthening its anti-betting protocols, and ensuring that professional basketball games remain completely transparent and fair.
